Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. Announces Job Cuts

Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. announced that it has laid off 15 employees and eliminated other jobs because of a landslide that damaged an ore pit west of Salt Lake City. Another 25 workers were offered other jobs in the company, and Kennecott says it cut 30 vacant positions. That makes 70 job reductions, the most recent for a company trying to recover from an April landslide that cut ore production.

Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. is cutting its executive ranks following a catastrophic landslide at an ore pit near Salt Lake City. The shake-up follows a round of job reductions in lower ranks. Rio Tinto announced the executive shuffle. From the top, Kennecott President and Chief Executive Kelly Sanders will step down Sept. 1, 2013. Sanders will take another position with the company that has yet to be determined. Other changes have Kennecott shrinking its management team to four executives from seven. The chief operating officer, Stephane Leblanc, will do double duty as the company's top executive in Utah.
