Cavendish Nuclear Signs EDF Energy Lifetime Enterprise Agreement and Strategic Partnership

Babcock announced that, Cavendish Nuclear, its wholly owned subsidiary, has renewed its long-term agreements to support the operation of EDF Energy's nuclear power stations in the UK. Cavendish Nuclear has signed a Lifetime Enterprise Agreement (LEA) and Strategic Partnership for Lifetime Interface Agreement with EDF Energy. The agreements cover the continuation of fuel route and other services to the EDF fleet of Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) and Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) stations, currently worth over £40 million per year. It also creates the potential for growth through the provision of additional services. These agreements will be in place until the last of the AGR stations stop generating electricity, currently estimated to be in 16 years. The agreements confirm Cavendish Nuclear's role as a key strategic partner to EDF Energy capable of meeting the company's long-term operating needs.

Balfour Beatty Plc Announces Joint Venture with Cavendish Nuclear

Balfour Beatty plc, has announced that its joint venture, or JV, with Cavendish Nuclear, has received instruction for the Phase III of a contract to construct a new silo maintenance facility for Sellafield Ltd., a nuclear management firm, valued at GBP 160 million. Working in a 45:55 joint venture, Balfour Beatty and Cavendish Nuclear will deliver the facility which will be an integral part of Sellafield's long-term waste retrieval hazard reduction programme. This final phase of works follows the first two phases consisting of a GBP 5.5 million preliminary design phase and GBP 12.5 million detailed design and enabling works. The new mechanical handling plant will support two existing waste silos with retrieving historic waste and reducing hazard. At the heart of the heavily reinforced concrete structure, which has a footprint of 0.5 hectares and will be 25 metres high, robotic installations will enable the Sellafield team to operate in a safe and controlled environment. Balfour Beatty is bringing together its broad range of expertise to deliver the project including design, procurement, civil engineering, construction and mechanical and electrical capabilities. In addition, the company will provide fully integrated commissioning and pre-operations delivery strategy and will train Sellafield's employees in operating the facility. A team of more than 100 engineers including nuclear specialists, civil and structural engineers and architectural technicians is currently using Building Information Modeling to create a full 4D design specification that dramatically reduces the construction programme. Work is scheduled to complete in autumn 2017, and the project will employ over 300 people at the height of construction.
