Global Business Power Corp. Plans to Build Coal-Fired Plant in Negros Island

Global Business Power Corp. is looking at Negros island as the next site to build a coal-fired power plant after its unit Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) officially launched on its 150-megawatt (MW) expansion here. In Negros, GBPC is also planning to put up a biomass power plant with a capacity of around 40 MW. The company was also planning a hydroelectric power project in the Visayas, which has a capacity of 'definitely more than 100 MW'. The next move for GBPC after it accounted for 29% of the Visayas grid, or what he called the company’s limits, was to look at Mindanao and Luzon. GBPC has also put up an affiliate retail electricity supplier (RES) to take advantage of the Energy Regulatory Commission’s rules on retail competition and open access (RCOA), which require consumers with an average peak demand of 1 MW to negotiate a supply contract with a RES. GBPC has a total gross capacity of 854 MW in the Visayas through subsidiaries PEDC with 314-MW, Toledo Power Co. with 182 MW, Cebu Energy Development Corp. with 246 MW, Panay Power Corp. with 104.5 and GBH Power Resources Inc. with 7.5 MW.

Global Business Power Corporation reported earnings results for the first half of ended June 30, 2016. For the period, the company reported net fees of PHP 6,839.7 million compared with PHP 7,058.3 a year ago. Net income attributable to equity holders was PHP 859.3 million against PHP 839.1 million a year ago.

Global Business Power Corporation reported consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 2016. For the quarter, the company’s net income was at PHP 397.5 million, increasing a noteworthy 51% from last year's PHP 263.8 million. Kilowatt-hour sales rose by 7% to 840.7 million kWh from 786.3 million kWh the previous year.
