Minera Antamina's Workers Plan Strike Hiatus

Striking workers at Minera Antamina, where a labor stoppage entered its seventeenth day on November 26, 2014 plan to return to work next week before resuming the strike December 10, 2014. Miners will return to work December 1, 2014 as the labor ministry declared the strike illegal, but may resume the strike on December 10, 2014. Antamina, where about 1,600 workers began a strike November 10 to pressure for a bigger share of profits and better labor conditions, has warned workers of imminent wage cuts, dismissals and lawsuits. The mine is running low on stockpiled ore despite putting into place contingency measures.

Workers at Antamina to Go on Strike as Talks End

Antamina announced that workers at its mine have affirmed they will go on strike from November 10 after talks on November 4 ended without resolution. One of the two unions, SUTRACOMASA has stated its intention to conduct a strike after learning that this year everyone in the company received lower earnings.

The 1,630-member Antamina workers union took a strike vote and will notify the company on October 27, 2014. Antamina signed a three-year labor agreement with its workers in 2012.
