Bayer MaterialScience LLC has introduced a new polycarbonate blend developed specifically for wearable devices. Makroblend® M525 polycarbonate (PC)/polyester provides a high level of chemical resistance against body lotions and other chemicals while also meeting the testing requirements of ISO 10993-5 (Cytotoxicity) and ISO 10993-10 (Irritation and Sensitization) for biocompatibility. This new plastic grade exhibits toughness, moldability and dimensional stability and can be color-matched to a wide variety of colors to satisfy the design criteria wearable devices require. The new grade offers improved overmolding performance in devices with features such as molded-in windows or tubes. Standard assembly methods such as ultrasonic welding and adhesive bonding also work quite well. Now commercially available, this latest addition to the Bayer medical-grade portfolio delivers a balance of performance and manufacturability specifically tailored to the requirements of wearable medical devices. In addition to Makroblend® PC/polyester blends, Bayer's engineering plastics portfolio includes medical-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate, Apec® high-heat polycarbonate, Bayblend® PC/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) blends, and Texin® thermoplastic polyurethanes, many of which meet the requirements of FDA-modified ISO 10993-1. The company also offers Dureflex® thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films for breathable wound care, and Bayfol® multilayer films for medical packaging.

Bayer MaterialScience LLC announced the appointment of Kenneth Schwartz to business development manager for Makrolon polycarbonate sheet products. In this role he will lead the marketing and business development activities for Makrolon polycarbonate sheet products in the North American region. Since joining Bayer in 2004 as a technology manager, Schwartz has taken on roles of increasing responsibility. With this promotion, he will continue his current role as resin marketing manager for in North America, while assuming additional responsibilities for business development for the company's sheet business. Schwartz will be based in Pennsylvania.
Bayer Materialscience Joins Project with Powder Coatings Solutions and Creative Pultrusions to Develop an Integrated Pultrusion and Coating Process

Creative Pultrusions, Inc. and Powder Coating Solutions have invited Bayer MaterialScience LLC to team up with them to develop an integrated pultrusion and coating process. The collaboration will draw on the companies' diverse strengths: Creative Pultrusions' technical talent and fifteen years of experience pultruding polyurethane resins, Powder Coating Solutions' powder coating technology, and Bayer's high-performance resins. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) often need high performance polyurethane resins when producing pultruded profiles for demanding outdoor applications. The properties of powder-coated pultruded polyurethane parts make them useful in a range of industries and applications, including pipe pilings, cross arms, and telephone poles. The traditional manufacturing process for pultruded polyurethane profiles requires multiple manufacturing steps and extra handling to pultrude the part and then to coat the finished product to avoid UV degradation. To help OEMs save time and money without sacrificing the integrity of the end product, the team is working to streamline the process. Bayer brings to the project a strong resin with high pultrusion line speed. Powder Coating Solutions specializes in the processes and equipment for powder coating of nonconductive substrates, and also supplies a variety of powder coating products. The enhanced system puts Powder Coating Solutions' Pultrucoater, equipment in line with pultrusion equipment, enabling the process of pultruding, powder coating, and part cutting to occur in one continuous operation.
