SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. to Bring into Operation Two Coal-Fired Power Plants in Malita, Davao Del Sur

SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. announced that it has committed to bring into operation two coal-fired power plants at a site in Malita, Davao del Sur, by the first quarter of 2016, representing half of the site's eventual capacity of 600 megawatts (MW). The company reported that the first plant with 150-MW capacity is scheduled to link up with the Mindanao grid in December 2015, while the other plant will be commissioned in March 2016. The two plants, will utilize the pre- heat circular fluidized bed technology, which is close to the state-of-the- art coal-fired power plants. In 2015, two other power projects are expected to start operations with Aboitiz Power Corp.'s (AboitizPower) 300-MW coal-fired power project under subsidiary Therma South Inc. and the Alcantara and Sons-led Sarangani Energy Corp., which will operate a 200-MW project in Sarangani province, just two hours from here. Meanwhile, AboitizPower has sought the Davao City council's approval for an expansion of Therma South complex's capacity from the original 300 MW to 645 MW.
