Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited Key Developments

Reliance Jio Announces Acquisition of Spectrum in the 800MHz and 1800MHz Bands in the Auction Conducted by Department of Telecommunications, Government of India

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. announced that it has successfully acquired the right to use spectrum in 13 key circles across India in the recently concluded spectrum auction conducted by DoT, Government of India. RJIL plans to provide seamless 4G services using LTE in 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2300MHz bands through an integrated ecosystem. With this investment, in addition to the pan-India 2300MHz spectrum, RJIL has spectrum in either 800MHz or 1800MHz or both in 20 out of total 22 circles in the country. This combined spectrum footprint across frequency bands provides significant network capacity and deep coverage. 800MHz is a popular choice for sub-GHz LTE implementation globally by leading operators across North America, South Korea, Australia and other markets to enhance coverage and service experience. In addition, in the Indian context, LTE implementation in this band has greater potential given spectrum availability in the future. Through this acquisition, RJIL's total equivalent spectrum footprint has increased from 597.6MHz to 751.1MHz (including uplink and downlink), strengthening its position as the large holder of liberalized spectrum. The payment to be made for the right to use this technology agnostic spectrum for a period of 20 years is INR 100,775.3 million.

Reliance Jio Plans To Merger Three India Based Companies

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited is starting a new venture called GAIA Smart Cities, a full service M2M telecom solutions and services provider. Sumit Chowdhury, President of Reliance Jio is planning to merge three India-based companies operational in the Smart City and Machine to Machine (M2M) space. Chowdhury is currently serving his notice period in Jio. "There are three companies which are operational and I am brining all of them together. We have got the agreement to join them together and make a much larger company. I have come to do the integration of these companies," Chowdhury told ET, adding that he has done angel investment in all of these companies, including in the to-be formed GAIASmartCity. Chowdhury however declined to share the names of these three companies and the funding amount. "Transaction has not completed yet," he said, adding that the venture is also seeking more funding from some global investors. All the three companies were founded in India but have global operations. "We already got one team that does M2M technologies and one more team that does software development," he said.
