Serials Solutions, Inc. Key Developments

University of Tokyo Selects the Summon Discovery Service of Serials Solutions

The University of Tokyo Library in Japan recently selected the Summon(R) discovery service from Serials Solutions. The powerful navigation and contextual guidance features in the Summon service significantly advance the research experience for both novice and experienced researchers. Librarians at the University of Tokyo will now have a better way to connect with more users, customize the discovery experience and lead users to better research outcomes. The Summon service supports discovery of content regardless of where the library purchased the resource or which provider hosts it. Unlike other discovery services, the Summon service leverages a unique match and merge technology that combines different types of metadata and information from multiple sources creating a single record optimized for discovery. This unique approach exposes resources to more users, directs researchers to full text when available, and maximizes the value and usage of a library's collections.

ProQuest Appoints Michael Hirsch as Vice President, Product Management for Serials Solutions

ProQuest has appointed Michael Hirsch as Vice President, Product Management for its Serials Solutions business located in Seattle, WA. In this high-impact role, Hirsch will drive product development and go-to-market strategies for Serials Solutions products, including the Summon discovery service, the portfolio of library management products and services, and Intota(R), a new SaaS library services platform. Hirsch has decades of experience in product management, as well as a broad background in technology, creating a solid foundation for strategic planning and execution, product lifecycle management and market analysis. Most recently Hirsch was director of product management for the handsets and tablets business of T-Mobile. Hirsch held multiple progressive management positions at Sony Corporation and Universal Electronics, until his role as director of product management at Qualcomm from 2007-2011.

MnPALS Selects Summon Discovery Service, 360 Link and 360 Resource Manager

The MnPALS consortium of libraries selected the Summon discovery service from Serials Solutions to offer users a more satisfying search experience. In support of MnPALS vision to provide user-focused information services, incorporating innovative technology and effective use of resources, the organization will also use the consortium edition of 360 Resource Manager. Holdings information for individual libraries across the consortium will be managed more efficiently, and with 360 Link, users will have quick access to full text. The Summon API enables consortia and libraries, regardless of size, to build completely custom interfaces, integrate with open source interfaces and create custom landing pages. Using the Summon API, the consortium integrated Summon search results into MnPALS Plus, a customized implementation of VuFind, addressing the difficulties users experience when searching the OPAC. MnPALS will be able to centralize and simplify e-resource management for member libraries by using 360 Resource Manager Consortium Edition.
