Qatar Airways Reportedly To Acquire Indirect Stake in Meridiana

According to Sardinia Post, Qatar Airways Limited is looking to acquire a 20% shareholding in the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development. Thorugh AKFED, Qatar Airways will hold an indirect interest in ALISARDA, parent of Meridiana S.p.A. According to the report, Qataris would position itself startegically to possible investment in the airlines. Further, Qataris will have access to Alisarda's other divisions such as Meridiana Maintenance S.p.A. Qataris will also get indirect access to the management of Olbia Costa Smeralda airport through Geasar S.p.A., Cortesa S.r.l. and Eccelsa Aviation S.r.l., subsidiaries of Alisarda. Meridiana's management denied past reports concerning talks with the Qataris but Akbar al Baker, Chief Executive officer of Qatar reportedly said that preliminary discussions did occur and Qatar Airways is open for future negotiations.
