Deepwater Wind, LLC Expects 30-Megawatt Cape Wind Project to Begin Commercial Operation in Early November 2016
Aug 17 16
Deepwater Wind LLC is on the verge of completing the first offshore wind farm in U.S. waters, a milestone for an industry that has struggled for a more than decade to build in North America. And in the coming weeks, New York State plans to release a long-range plan to develop wind farms off the coast of Long Island. The Block Island wind project comes after an attempt to build a 468-megawatt off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, ran aground after years of opposition from fishermen, American Indian groups and the Kennedy family, whose compound of homes overlooks Nantucket Sound. The Cape Wind project had been in the works for 13 years, when National Grid Plc and Northeast Utilities" NSTAR unit filed to cancel its power-purchase agreements in early 2015, and has made little progress since then. Workers have installed blades on four of the five 589-foot turbines at the site off the coast of Rhode Island and construction may be complete as early as this week. The 30-megawatt, $300 million project is expected to begin commercial operation in early November 2016.

Deepwater Wind Secures Funding for 30-Mw Offshore Wind Farm from Societe Generale and KeyBank National Association

Deepwater Wind announced that its 30-MW Block Island offshore wind farm is fully funded with more than $290 million in project financing from Societe Generale and KeyBank National Association. The project, the first offshore wind farm to reach such a financial milestone, now has secured all necessary debt and equity financing for construction and operation. On-site construction is expected to start this summer. The project, offshore Rhode Island, will sell electricity to National Grid plc subsidiary Narragansett Electric Co. under a 20-year contract starting in September 2016, according to SNL Energy data. The fledgling U.S. offshore wind industry was dealt a setback in January when National Grid and Eversource Energy, formerly known as Northeast Utilities, terminated their contracts with Cape Wind, a 468-MW offshore wind farm proposed for Nantucket Sound. The developer, Energy Management Inc. subsidiary Cape Wind Associates, has promised to continue pursuing plans to build the project.
