UPMC Thyroid Cancer Screening Test Saves Money, Time

UPMC is preparing to broaden its marketing effort for a thyroid cancer screening test, which could save patients the pain of surgery and thousands of dollars in treatment costs. The genetic test developed by Nikiforov provides far more certainty with fewer indeterminate test results. The UPMC test saves the cost of subsequent tissue sampling and surgery, which can cost up to $9,000 for removal of the thyroid.
U.S. District Judge Announces Suit Alive against UPMC and Highmark Inc

U.S. District Judge Joy Flowers Conti denied a motion by UPMC and Highmark Inc. to dismiss the lawsuit, although she did dismiss some claims against UPMC. The lawsuit has been tied up over technical arguments over who can sue for damages in an antitrust lawsuit involving the two regulated medical industry giants. The current version of the lawsuit seeks to represent Cole's Wexford and others who bought small group health insurance coverage from Highmark Health Insurance Co. or any of its other for-profit subsidiaries between July 1, 2010, and March 21, 2012.

UPMC announced earnings results for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2015. For the year, the company's operating revenues increased to $12 billion, due primarily to growth in insurance services and health services. Operating income, which is reinvested in programs that support UPMC's mission, was $338 million. UPMC's excess of revenues over expenses (net income) was $417 million. UPMC's earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization (EBIDA) a key measure of financial performance and the ability to generate the necessary resources for reinvestment were $804 million, a record high for UPMC.
