Bell Helicopter Textron Inc. Key Developments

Bell Helicopter to Lay Off 1,100 as V-22 Orders Continue to Wane

Bell Helicopter plans to lay off 1,100 employees globally because of waning production of its V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft and a soft market for commercial helicopters. Bell has roughly 4,600 employees in Fort Worth and 800 in Amarillo, the site of V-22 final assembly. The cuts will apply to all areas of Bell's business and would included both management and non-management, as well as covered and non-covered workers. The company reported that affected workers will be provided with as much transition time as possible and its goal is to lessen the involuntary impact on its teammates wherever it can. The company announced that it had anticipated and planned for the decreased production of its revolutionary V-22, which can take off like a helicopter and fly like a fixed-wing aircraft.

Bell Helicopter Delivers Bell 412EPI to Chongqing General Aviation

Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. company, announced the delivery of a Bell 412EPI to Chongqing General Aviation (CQGA). The helicopter is the first certified Bell 412 type aircraft to operate in China and will be used for fire-fighting missions. A delivery ceremony was held at Bell Helicopter s customization and delivery center in Piney Flats, Tenn. on April 22. The new Bell 412 EPI was outfitted with a fire-fighting water tank, Bambi bucket, hoist, cargo hook, radar altimeter, and search light and will join CQGA s fleet of aircraft that also includes two Bell 407GX helicopters. Introduced in 2013, the Bell 412EPI continues to garner interest from international customers, including the Canadian Coast Guard who recently signed an agreement to purchase seven of the aircraft. The Bell 412EPI improves the Bell 412 platform with the Bell BasiX Pro fully integrated glass flight deck, providing critical flight information at-a-glance for greater situational awareness and safety. The Bell BasiX Pro system is specifically designed to meet the requirements of twin-engine helicopters and is optimized for IFR, Category A and JAR OPS3 compliant operations. The avionics suite also includes high resolution digital maps, electronic charts and approach plates, ADS-B transponder and optional HTAWS and XM satellite links.

Bell Helicopter Wins Canadian Coast Guard Contract for 7 Bell 412EPI Helicopters

Bell Helicopter announced a signed contract with Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) for the supply of seven Bell 412EPI helicopters to the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). The aircraft will support the CCG's maritime security and fisheries activities and will contribute to the safety, accessibility, sustainability and security of Canadian waters. The aircraft were signed for by the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs, in a formal signing ceremony at the Bell Helicopter Textron Canada Ltd. Assembly Center. contract has a value of approximately CAD 155 million and was awarded to Bell Helicopter within the context of the Canadian Coast Guard's Fleet Renewal Plan. The first aircraft is expected to be delivered in June 2016, with one helicopter expected to be delivered every three months thereafter. This contract for Bell 412's follows a CCG contract announced in May 2014 for 15 Bell 429 helicopters. Bell Helicopter delivered the first of the 15 Bell 429's in late March. CCG will utilize the flexibility of the Bell 412EPI to support the non-military activities of multiple government departments and agencies, including the Department of National Defense, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Environment Canada. The aircraft will operate in all areas of Canada, including both coastal regions, inland waters such as the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, and Canada's expansive Arctic areas.
