SK Telecom and Ericsson Team Up for Small IoT

SK Telecom announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Ericsson to cooperate in the development of technology for the 'Internet of Small Things (small IoT)'. SKT and Ericsson agreed to develop 'machine type communication' (MTC), or machine-to-machine (M2M) technology, which allows both wireless and wired systems to communicate with various other devices. Under the Internet of Small Things agreement, they will develop technology that supports kilobytes of low-speed devices that will be connected at the same time in the coming IoT era. SKT and Ericsson will co-work to develop the MTC technologies, which allow small things that require low data to communicate in the current LTE network environment, the spokesman added. The two companies will also work together to reduce the cost of small IoT devices by eliminating unnecessary functions such as multiple antenna and broadband frequency signals.

SK Telecom Co. Ltd. Launches IoT Platform

SK Telecom launched its open standards-based Internet of Things (IoT) platform. Called ThingPlug, it aims to foster growth in the IoT ecosystem by using the globally recognised oneM2M standard, which has been in development for several years and saw the release of its first 10 specifications in February. SK Telecom completed developing its platform in December 2014 and has since been busy prepping it for commercial deployment.
