Ford Motor Co Plans to Lay Off 700 Workers Owing to Poor Car Sales in India

Ford Motor Co announced its laying off 700 workers at a Michigan assembly plant because of slow sales of the small cars and hybrids it makes. The Michigan Assembly Plant, in the Detroit suburb of Wayne, will move from three shifts to two starting June 22. The plant, which makes the Ford Focus and C-Max hybrid, has been operating on three shifts since 2012.
Ford Unveils New Taurus

Ford unveiled its newest Taurus, the company is joining the race to appeal to Chinese business buyers by offering bigger, more luxurious back seats. The Taurus, Ford Motor Co.'s first full-size sedan in China. The sedan was unveiled ahead of this week's Shanghai auto show. It is due to be produced at a new $760 million Ford factory in Hangzhou, southwest of Shanghai. Inside: The new Taurus's wheelbase is three inches longer than the standard Taurus at 116 inches, with the added space going to the back seat. Ford says there are 25 stowage spaces throughout the cabin and cup holders designed to hold tea bottles. Designers used leather for the seats and noise-deadening materials to keep the cabin quiet. The rear seat has a control panel for air conditioning and onboard media. Outside: Features include LED tail lights and 19-inch alloy wheels. Under the hood: The Taurus will come with Ford's new twin-turbo 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. The company said that lightweight materials and advanced controls make it more powerful and efficient. Ford launched its integrated services centre in the Moharam Bek area in Alexandria. The centre includes a showroom for the different models and accessories of Ford, as well as a special section for spare parts. The new centre comes within Auto Jameel's plan to facilitate services for Ford clients and maintain communication with them. The new centre is built on 2,100 metres, and is equipped with advanced technology devices and tools, contributing to increasing service quality and decreasing the time needed for maintenance. The centre also includes an area designed to be a clients' lounge, equipped with panoramic view, which allows clients to follow the different maintenance stages of his car. Moreover, the centre provides different services of sales and funding offers, in addition to offering car exchange, cash and instalment options. It also offers after-sales services, such as repair and painting, as well as a service of transporting the client from the centre to the nearest mall while the car is in maintenance.
Ford Motor Co. Launches New Explorer SUV at Shanghai Motor Show

Ford Motor Co. has launched its new Explorer SUV at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show. The model features a revised exterior design, a redesigned, higher grille framed by LED low-beam and halogen reflector high-beam headlights, and topped by a clamshell hood design, a new closed-off lower roof rack with rainwater channels, a new rear spoiler, a dual-panel moon roof with a power sunscreen, flexible seating arrangements, enhanced Active Park Assist with perpendicular park assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with brake support. The vehicle is available with a choice of engines ranging from a new 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost engine and a 3.5-litre twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine on Sports and Titanium series. Both engines are coupled with a six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission with manual mode and paddle-shifter operation for a heightened performance feel.
Ford Motor Company, Ford Global Technologies and DowAksa to Jointly Develop Carbon Fiber for High-Volume Automotive Light-Weighting Applications

Ford and DowAksa signed a joint development agreement (JDA) to formally advance research on cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing of automotive-grade carbon fiber, a material poised to play a significant role in the drive to make vehicles lighter for greater fuel efficiency, performance and capability. The agreement, between Ford Motor Company, Ford Global Technologies and DowAksa 'a 50/50 joint venture between The Dow Chemical Company and Aksa Akrilik Kimya Sanayii A.S' will combine DowAksa’s feedstock capacity, carbon fiber conversion and downstream intermediates production capabilities with Ford's expertise in design, engineering and high-volume manufacturing. The goal is to produce materials that make cost-effective carbon fiber composite parts that are much lighter than steel but meet automotive strength requirements. The JDA allows the companies to collaboratively generate new, lower-cost automotive grades of carbon fiber that can be applied to aligned and random fiber formats while maintaining compatibility with both thermoset and thermoplastic matrices. The agreement also includes a pathway for potential extension of development collaboration into a commercial manufacturing partnership.
