Huawei Signs an Agreement with NTT DOCOMO, INC. to Commence Field Trials of 5G Radio Access Technologies Associated with New Air-Interface Technologies
Mar 17 15
Huawei announced that it has signed an agreement with NTT DOCOMO, INC. to commence field trials of 5G Radio Access Technologies (RAT) associated with new air-interface technologies. The joint trials will be conducted in outdoor environments in both China and Japan, and aim to validate foundational radio access technologies for emerging 5G mobile networks. Targeted for commercial launch in 2020, 5G networks will transform the mobile industry. With 1,000 times the capacity and 100 times the speed of LTE, 5G will enable unprecedented mass connectivity for 100 billion devices, a key step in realizing the Internet of Things (IoT) and automating vertical industries. With the Olympic and Paralympic Games scheduled to be held in Tokyo in 2020, Japan has been slated as one of the first markets for the rollout of 5G. Towards this effort, Huawei has joined Japans Fifth Generation Mobile Communications Promotion Forum (5GMF), a joint project established in September 2014 to create collaboration among industry, academia, and government sectors on 5G planning and implementation. Huawei has been playing a leading role in defining and promoting 5G around the world. It has also announced global plans to invest a minimum of $600 million in the research and innovation of 5G technologies by 2018. Huawei and DOCOMO will collaborate in testing spectrum agnostic air-interface technologies, with a focus on sub-6GHz spectrum. The experimental system will test the new spectrum agnostic RAT in conjunction with Massive MIMO radio and advanced algorithms. These field trials will be conducted over-the-air and to validate end-user data speeds.

NTT DOCOMO, INC. Develops Prototype Multilingual App for Disaster Warnings
Mar 10 15
NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced that it has developed a prototype multilingual app for its Early Warning Area Mail service that will enable emergency warnings of impending earthquakes or tsunamis in five foreign languages. The app will allow people in Japan who do not speak Japanese to receive warnings, both written and verbal, in English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish or Portuguese. The Early Warning Area Mail service, which was originally launched in February 2012, distributes earthquake early warnings and tsunami warnings issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency, and also local disaster and evacuation information (in Japanese only) issued by national and regional public institutions. The service is designed to function reliably even when mobile networks become congested with heavy traffic. In the case of an impending earthquake, for example, an early warning will be issued to people in the predicted area, causing users' smartphones to begin making a distinctive alarm-like sound followed by a voice readout saying Earthquake in the preset language. Simultaneously, the phone will display an Area Mail message that reads Earthquake Warning: Strong shaking is expected soon. Stay calm and seek shelter nearby. The multilingual text messages have been prepared with support from the Japan Meteorological Agency. DOCOMO developed the app under the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program, which is administered by the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation. The new app will be displayed during the meeting of the Sendai Committee for the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, which will begin in Japan on March 14, 2015. Area Mail is a trademark or registered trademark of company in Japan. The company's Early Warning Area Mail service is only available to subscribers in Japan.
