The index covers total retail trade turnover of all goods excluding motorized vehicles and petrol. It is regarded as the more important among short-term indicators of consumer demand. A sample of about 8,800 units is selected from the population of retail trade establishments in the VAT register, representing about a quarter of all units. This includes a sub-sample of 4500 chain stores with direct reporting from their respective head-offices. Base 1998=100.
