The index, which begins in Sept. 2001, represents the percentage of economically active people above the age of 10 in six Brazilian metropolitan areas (Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre) whom, when surveyed during the month, said they had sought work in the previous 30 days. The areas are based on information from the 2000 census. This index takes over from similar 7-day and 30-day studies that ended in Nov. 2002. The Index is NSA.
