Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Robert Litan will join Bloomberg Government as Director of Research. Litan is currently the Vice President for Research and Policy at the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City and a Senior Fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution, where his research includes topics in regulation, financial institutions, telecommunications, entrepreneurship and general economic policy. Litan will begin work August 6, Bloomberg Government head Don Baptiste said in announcing the appointment.

“I am thrilled to be joining Bloomberg Government, the leading data and information service focused on translating the impact of government actions and policy on business,” said Litan. “I’m looking forward to working with the extremely talented group of people that Bloomberg has attracted.”

Throughout his career, Litan has been frequently called to testify before Congress on a variety of subjects reflecting his recognized experience interpreting the interplay between government and business. For example, in 2010, he testified before the U.S. Congress’ Joint Economic Committee about the ways in which federally funded innovation benefits national and local economies. In 2011 he co-authored testimony about the risks posed by exchange traded funds before a subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

Litan has served in the federal government in multiple capacities. Between 1993 and 1996 he served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in charge of civil antitrust litigation at the Department of Justice and then as associate director of the Office of Management and Budget. He has also written a number of influential federal reports including two Congressionally- mandated studies for the Treasury Department. He has authored or co-authored over 25 books, edited another 14 and authored or co- authored over 200 articles in journals, magazines and newspapers on a broad range of public issues.

“Bob Litan will bring knowledge and experience that will help take Bloomberg Government’s analyst reports to a new level,” said Norman Pearlstine, Chief Content Officer of Bloomberg LP and Co-Chair of Bloomberg Government. “In doing so, he will work in partnership with Bloomberg Government Managing Editor Mike Riley, building on the more than 360 research papers produced by BGOV’s exceptional team of analysts since our launch in January 2011.”

“Bob will be an exciting addition to our team as BGOV continues to grow and expand in Washington. His unique blend of public sector service and research on the intersection of business and government will sharpen BGOV’s focus on the business impacts of government actions,” said Baptiste.

Litan received his B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania; his J.D. from Yale Law School; and both his M. Phil. and Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University. Prior to assuming his current positions at the Kauffman Foundation and at the Brookings Institution, Litan served as Vice President and Director, Economic Studies, at Brookings from 1996 until 2003.
