View

August 24th, 2012

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Bloomberg LP announced today that Cass R. Sunstein will contribute a regular column to Bloomberg View and serve as the newest member of the Bloomberg Government Advisory Board.

Sunstein is the former Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) and recently stepped down to become the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and Director of the new Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy. As Administrator of OIRA from 2009 to 2012, Sunstein was the top White House official in charge of shaping government regulations under President Obama. Sunstein made his mark as an advocate of innovative, low-cost methods of regulation and transparency as part of the Obama administration’s Open Government Initiative. Sunstein won plaudits for cost-effective regulatory reforms that improved environmental quality, safety on the highways, and health care while eliminating rules that were outdated, irrational or overly expensive.

“Bloomberg View and Bloomberg Government provide valuable analysis, data, news and opinion and I look forward to joining their teams,” said Cass Sunstein.

Sunstein joined the administration from Harvard Law School, taking a leave of absence from his service as the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law. At the time of his appointment, Sunstein was one of the most-quoted legal authorities in the country and the author of numerous books and hundreds of academic articles. His recent book with economist Richard Thaler, Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth and Happiness (2008), discussed how private companies and public organizations can help individuals make better choices. Its approach to behavioral economics has proved immensely popular with political and business leaders at home and abroad.

“Cass will be a perfect addition to the Bloomberg Government Advisory Board,” said Norman Pearlstine, Chief Content Officer of Bloomberg and Co-Chairman of Bloomberg Government. “His knowledge and experience serving in the administration will provide a unique perspective that will be invaluable to our clients and analysts.”

At Bloomberg View, the opinion arm of Bloomberg News, Sunstein will write on a range of issues, with a special focus on law, economics and government.

“Cass is a wonderfully provocative thinker. His writings on law, behavioral economics, technology and public policy have put him at the center of some of the great debates of our time. We’re thrilled that he’s going to be part of View,” said David Shipley, Executive Editor of Bloomberg View.
