Columba Bush Heads to Christie Country for Campaign Cash

The campaign's fundraising calendar reveals that the back of the pack candidate is leaning forward when it comes to gathering cash.

Is Christie a Plausible National Security Candidate?

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is dispatching his wife to the backyard of one of his presidential rivals, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, to raise campaign cash.

A calendar of Bush campaign finance events obtained by Bloomberg Politics shows that Columba Bush will headline a Wednesday evening reception in Saddle River, a wealthy suburb of New York City that Christie won overwhelmingly in his 2013 re-election bid. Records at the New Jersey Division of Elections show the governor got 845 votes in the borough to 143 for his Democratic opponent, Barbara Buono.

While Bush's standing has dropped in the Republican presidential polls, he remains competitive thanks largely to his ability to raise money through an extensive fundraising network, based on a foundation laid by his father and brother, both former U.S. presidents.

Campaign fundraising is a family affair for the Bush clan. Jeb Bush's older brother, former President George W. Bush, and sister-in-law, former first lady Laura Bush, will host a fundraiser for the campaign on Dec. 7 in New Orleans. Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, Jeb Bush's son, will be the featured attraction at a Washington fundraiser.

On Thursday, one day after his wife's foray into the Garden State, Bush himself will host a pair of fundraisers in the nation's capital, including one at Chinese Disco, a Georgetown bar and restaurant, aimed at young professionals. He'll raise money in New York on Dec. 9 and 10.

This weekend, the former Florida governor is welcoming donors to Miami, where he lives and has his campaign headquarters, with a pair of fundraisers on Friday and Saturday. He's also leaning on elected officials in the state for help, showing off support in the Florida state legislature, where one of his presidential competitors, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, once served.

Florida House Speaker Steve Crisafulli and designated Speaker Richard Corcoran host a fundraiser for Bush on Thursday in Tallahassee, the state capital. When Rubio was speaker of the Florida state house, Corcoran served as his chief of staff. Florida state Senator Joe Negron, the designated state Senate president, will host a Bush fundraiser on Dec. 7 in Fort Lauderdale.

Bush is also attending fundraisers in December in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Las Vegas on Dec. 14, Los Angeles on Dec. 17, and Jackson, Mississippi, on Dec. 7.
