Staff for Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes reached out to Donald Trump’s staff to broker truce after Trump went on MSNBC and called on Fox anchor Megyn Kelly to apologize, CNN reports, citing unidentified people on both sides of the situation.
- We “can resolve this now,” Ailes said to Trump, according to CNN, “or we can go to war”
- After call Trump stopped criticizing Kelly, Fox resumed covering Trump on its shows
- “Ailes had to make peace” because of Trump’s popularity, former Trump adviser Roger Stone tells CNN
- NOTE: Trump tweeted Aug. 10 that he’d spoken to Ailes, who assured him of fair treatment; Ailes said in statement he stands by Kelly and that he’d told Trump campaign will be covered “with fairness and balance”
