How to Succeed at Grandparenting Without Leaving the Trail

Clinton cancels fundraisers to spend time with her new granddaughter.

So your grandchild has just arrived, and it is your first. Also, you are booked solid with campaign events for people really counting on you. What to do? If you are Hillary Clinton, you turn to the new grandpa, and send him on his way.

Bill Clinton will take his wife's place Tuesday night in Maryland at a planned fundraiser for gubernatorial hopeful Anthony Brown so she can be with the baby. He's also heading to North Carolina to raise money for Democratic Sen. Kay Hagen. And he's speaking at four events in Arkansas next week.

Hillary Clinton bowed out of scheduled appearance Tuesday at the congressional Hispanic Caucus's annual conference for grandma duties. She canceled a fundraiser planned for tonight at her home in Washington for New Hampshire state Senator Lou D'Allesandro -- an ally in a key presidential state.

Democrats in New York were still able to grab a few moments with the new grandmother. On Monday she appeared with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi at a fundraising lunch for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Tickets started at $10,000 and went up to $32,400, according to an invitation.

Later this week, Hillary Clinton is -- at least for now -- scheduled to headline an event in Florida (another key presidential state) for Republican-turned-Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist. The new starlet, baby Charlotte, is expected to stay home in New York.
