The "machine" inspired by Franz Kafka’s 1914 short story “In the Penal Colony,” was commissioned for the Duchamp-inspired exhibition “The Bachelor Machines” 1975-77, curated by Herald Szeemann. Included in “Ghosts in the Machine,” the torture device executed its victims with needles, which inscribed their crimes on their bodies.
