John Garfield, left, while testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee, accompanied by his lawyers, Louis Hizey, center, and Sidney Davis. Garfield was the first witness in HUAC's investigation of communism in Hollywood to deny that he had ever been a party member. The committee never stiooed hounding him and it became increasingly difficult to find work. He died in 1952 of a heart attack at age 39.
