Avon by the Sea

James S. Russell/Bloomberg

A view of a beach replenishment project at Avon by the Sea on Nov. 22, 2009. These projects attempt to protect communities from coastal erosion and storm damage by widening beaches and creating dunes. They have been criticized for their cost, since they must be renewed periodically at millions of dollars per mile, typically paid mostly by the Federal government.
