NEW YORK – Bloomberg Sports, founded as a vertical division of Bloomberg L.P. and now part of a joint venture with IMG, today unveiled a solid analysis of its “Decision Maker” fantasy football tool through the first quarter of the NFL season, showing that the product is outpacing its competitors in giving fans the best possible advantage for their fantasy play.
Each week Bloomberg Sports (BSports) tests projections for the season to date against five top fantasy sites (Yahoo! Sports, ESPN, CBS Sports, AccuScore, numberFire) and through the first quarter of the NFL Season, BSports has outperformed the competition in almost every position. BSports measures the accuracy of its model by comparing projections to the actual number of fantasy points scored per player for each position. BSports then calculates the R2 coefficient–similar to correlation–which determines how much of the variation in fantasy points can be explained by their projections. BSports has also calculated the R2 for the projections of these other top fantasy sites, and in almost every position the R2 of the Decision Maker model is the strongest.
As of Tuesday morning, B Sports ranked Number One in four of seven key categories, including QB, wide receiver, running back, and overall projections, while ranking second (behind ESPN) in kicker projections, tight end, and defense. “Bloomberg Sports is all about the numbers, and the numbers are not lying when you compare the performance of our tools to the other top products in the industry,” said Bill Squadron, head of Bloomberg Sports. “We are proud to say all the time and effort and research we have put into developing ‘Decision Maker’ is paying off with some amazing results, and we are very excited to see how we do at the midway point and beyond. Decision Maker 2012, an interactive fantasy football application, uses Bloomberg’s state-of-the art advanced analytic tools to advise fantasy football players on their best starting lineup each week. Bloomberg Sports also introduced Crowd Call, a free fan-voting companion tool which will allow fans to test their own predictive capabilities against the Bloomberg Sports technology-driven selections. The 2012 products are be available on the web and the Apple iOS mobile platform and are among the top selling paid football aps for fantasy players again this season. Decision Maker includes the ability for fans to easily compare any two players using the exclusive B-Score rank (using metrics developed by Bloomberg Sports to summarize a player’s weekly value based on Player Performance, Team Support, Opponent Matchup, and Game Conditions), and a Risk/Reward Score, which shows the player’s volatility and upside potential that week. The app’s B-Score Factor explanations break down the numbers in detail by category with visuals and graphs. The tool also offers a full-season projection component that can aid fantasy players during their draft. Crowd Call allows fans to choose which player in a head-to-head matchup will have a more productive fantasy scoring week, and then instantly aggregates the results of all voters. It will also feature week-to-week game match-ups.
