One of the toughest challenges for any journalist is to tell a story that everyone knows in a way that’s new and fresh. And when the story you’re trying to tell is the most thoroughly-covered financial news story in history, you’ve really got your work cut out for you.

As editor Josh Tyrangiel and our team at Bloomberg Businessweek approached the challenge of how to cover the five year anniversary of the financial crisis from a new perspective, they decided to make our company’s first-ever feature-length film.

Directed by Academy Awar-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger, our documentary “Hank: Five Years From the Brink” is a behind-the-scenes window into the effort to rescue the country from the 2008 financial crisis and the man charged with leading it.

Why did we choose to make a film? We believe that our journalists have an obligation to do whatever it takes to tell a story in the format that the content demands. And in the same way you can’t truly know a person until you look him or her straight in the eye, we didn’t think you could know the story of the crisis without seeing it through Hank and Wendy Paulson’s eyes. This is a story that could only be told through film.

To date, most of the coverage of the crisis has focused on the decisions that were made. That makes sense; those historic decisions impacted the global economy in ways we’re still measuring today. But our news team began to view those decisions as just the tip of the iceberg; this film brings you to the iceberg: all the raw emotion and complexity that led up to the actions you remember well.
