Surgical Centers Enrich Doctors, Irk Insurers

July 19 (Bloomberg) -- Surgeons Shahram Gholami and Jeffrey Kanel, and J. Edward Neugebauer, chief of litigation for Aetna Inc., talk with Bloomberg's Peter Waldman about Bay Area Surgical Management LLC. The out-of-network surgery centers charge rates that are as much as 35 times higher than in-network facilities. Aetna Inc. sued Bay Area Surgical in February, claiming it has reaped "illegal and exorbitant profits" through fraud. Saratoga, California-based Bay Area Surgical runs seven surgery centers in the San Francisco Bay Area and an eighth in Doral, Florida. (Source: Bloomberg)
