Jeter Leads Off for American League in Baseball’s All-Star Game
Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees will bat in the leadoff spot for the American League team in his 14th and final Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
The 40-year-old Jeter, who said in February that he’ll retire after this season, was voted by fans as the AL’s starting shortstop for tomorrow’s All-Star Game in Minneapolis.
It’s the ninth time Jeter, the Yankees’ captain and a five-time World Series champion, has been selected an All-Star starter over his 20-year major-league career.
Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners was selected as the starting pitcher for the AL, while Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals will start for the National League. Both will be making their first All-Star Game starts.
Jeter, who is hitting .272 with two home runs, 25 runs batted in and 31 runs scored, is followed in the lineup by Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout, Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano and Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista hits fifth for the AL, whose starting lineup also includes Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Nelson Cruz, Orioles outfielder Adam Jones, Oakland Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson and Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez.
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen will lead off for the NL team, which also features Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins. Milwaukee third baseman Aramis Ramirez hits sixth, followed by Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, and catcher Jonathan Lucroy and outfielder Carlos Gomez, both of the Brewers.
The AL holds an all-time 44-38-2 lead in the All-Star Game and last year won 3-0 to end a three-year losing streak. The winning league gets homefield advantage in the best-of-seven World Series.
