Cooley Adds 6 Mintz Levin IP Specialists: Business of Law
Cooley LLP said a group of intellectual property attorneys from Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo PC are joining the firm in Boston and New York.
The group is led by Ivor R. Elrifi, the former co-chairman of Mintz Levin’s IP practice, and partner Heidi A. Erlacher.
“The addition of Ivor, Heidi and their team establishes Cooley as one of the pre-eminent, fully integrated IP firms, with one of the largest national life-sciences patent practices in the country,” Jim Brogan, chairman of the firm’s intellectual property practice, said in a statement.
The other four former Mintz Levin partners are Brian Hopkins, Jennifer Karnakis, Cynthia Kozakiewicz and Matthew Pavao.
“We wish our former colleagues well, and we will continue to serve our valued IP clients from our Boston, London, New York and San Diego of offices,” the firm said in a statement. Mintz Levin, meanwhile, added Kenneth Appleby, who has more than 25 years of experience in taxation matters. He joins as a member based in Boston, from Foley & Lardner LLP.
Baker Botts, K&L Gates, Shiff Hardin, Steptoe: Lateral Moves
Litigator and criminal defense attorney Tom DiBiagio, a former U.S. Attorney for Maryland and most recently a partner at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP, joined Baker Botts LLP as a partner in Washington.
Daniel Restrepo, a former White House official, joined Jones Walker LLP’s Washington office as a special counsel in the business and commercial transactions practice group and as a member of the government relations team. For almost six years, Restrepo acted as the principal adviser to U.S. President Barack Obama on issues related to Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada, serving as special assistant to the President and senior director for western hemisphere affairs at the National Security Council.
The Chicago office of K&L Gates LLP added Vivek G. Bhatt, formerly of Vedder Price PC, as a partner in its debt-capital markets practice.
Schiff Hardin LLP said Imron T. Aly has joined the intellectual property group as a partner in Chicago. He will co-lead the pharmaceuticals and biologics patent-litigation client service team along with partner Sailesh K. Patel.
Fred Foreman, who retired as chief judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit of Lake County, Illinois, is returning to private practice as senior counsel in Chicago-based Freeborn & Peters LLP’s government and regulatory law practice group and complex litigation and antitrust team.
Sedgwick LLP said Robert D. Towey, previously of Lowenstein Sandler LLP, is joining its commercial litigation practice in Newark, New Jersey.
Structured-finance lawyer Lawton Camp joined Kaye Scholer LLP as a finance partner in New York. He was previously at Allen & Overy LLP.
Steptoe & Johnson LLP announced that Neil Dooley, formerly of Hogan Lovells LLP, has joined the firm as a partner in the commercial litigation group in London.
Anthony W. Pierotti is joining Haynes & Boone LLP’s real estate practice in Orange County, California, as partner. He was previously the head of the real estate and commercial finance practice group at Irell & Manella LLP.
Jackson Walker LLP added Wes Strickland as a partner in its environmental and legislative practice group. Strickland, previously at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck LLP, will work in the Austin, Texas, office.
Perkins Coie LLP announced that Dean W. Harvey, formerly of Andrews Kurth LLP, has joined the Dallas office as a partner in the technology transactions and privacy practice.
Jackson Lewis PC added Felhaber Larson PA labor and employment lawyer Brian T. Benkstein in Minneapolis as a shareholder.
Aaron Bloom joined TroyGould PC as a member of the firm’s litigation practice group in Los Angles from Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger LLP, where he handled entertainment, real estate and general business disputes.
Freshfields Names Juratowitch as Co-Leader of Public Law Group
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP appointed Paris partner Ben Juratowitch as co-head of its public international law group.

McDermott Names New Heads of Chicago and New York Offices
McDermott Will & Emery LLP said Lydia Kelley will be the new partner-in-charge of its Chicago office and David Goldman will lead New York’s.
They replace Nancy Gerrie in Chicago and Keith Pattiz in New York, who will concentrate full-time on their practices.
