Zhang Xiagang’s $12.1 Million Painting Sets Artist Record
Chinese contemporary artist Zhang Xiaogang’s oil painting titled “Bloodline: Big Family No.3” sold for HK$94.2 million ($12.1 million), including fees, at Sotheby’s (BID) in Hong Kong today, setting an auction record for the artist.
The work, painted in 1995, was last sold at auction in 2008 by Sotheby’s Hong Kong when it fetched HK$47 million. The previous record for Zhang was a work titled “Forever Love,” which sold for HK$79 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in April 2011, according to artnet.
Zeng Fanzhi’s painting the ’’Last Supper’’ set the record for the most expensive Chinese contemporary work when it sold for $23.3 million at Sotheby’s in October.
