Seven Catholic Schools to Exit Big East July 1, CBSSports Says
The seven Catholic schools leaving the Big East conference will begin their new basketball league on July 1, CBSSports.com reported, citing people familiar with the announcement, which will be made today.
DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Villanova will keep the Big East name and hold the conference tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York, the sports website said.
During the 2013-14 season, Xavier and Butler will join the new conference, with the possibility that Creighton will also be added, CBSSports.com said.
The seven schools also will announce a new television deal with News Corp. (NWSA)’s new Fox cable channel that will pay about $3 million per school, CBSSports.com said.
