Michelin Guide to Pub Food Adds 8 London Venues, Quality Rises
Michelin’s guide to eating out in U.K. pubs adds eight more London establishments, saying the quality and value of pub food is steadily improving.
The new entries include the Fox & Grapes in Wimbledon, taken over this year by French chef Claude Bosi, who holds two Michelin stars for Hibiscus in central London. Bosi and his brother Cedric serve traditional pub food and welcome dog walkers from the nearby Common. The guide, published tomorrow, recommends 530 pubs across the U.K., 86 more than last year.
“We can all feel justly proud of our pubs and the way they have adapted to changing times,” Rebecca Burr, the guide’s editor, said in an e-mailed release today. “These pubs make terrific use of local produce and often champion regional specialties.”
The other establishments in the capital added to the guide are the Crabtree, Hammersmith; My Dining Room, Fulham; Bobbin, Clapham Common; the King’s Head, Teddington; Owl & Pussycat, Spitalfields; the Grazing Goat, Marylebone; and the Portman, Marylebone.
The Hand & Flowers, in Marlow, about an hour west of London, last month became the first U.K. pub to win two Michelin stars. Chef Tom Kerridge serves a set lunch at 16.50 pounds ($26.31) for three courses or 12.50 pounds for two.
The menu on Nov. 2 was cauliflower soup with potato and onion pakora; Bowditch pork fillet with braised Puy lentils and salsa verde; toasted rice fool with Provencal fig compote and maple.
Michelin & Cie. is the world’s second-biggest tiremaker, after Bridgestone Corp. It produced its first guide in August 1900, distributed free of charge (until 1920) and intended for chauffeurs. The guide contained practical information, including street maps and tips on using and repairing tires.
Burr took over the U.K. guide this year after the retirement of Derek Bulmer. Internationally, the guides have a new director: New York-born Michael Ellis, who has been named to succeed Jean-Luc Naret, who has resigned.
The 2012 edition of the “Michelin Eating Out in Pubs” guide will be available in bookshops and online tomorrow, priced 13.99 pounds or 16.99 euros in Ireland.
