Former Champions Anderlecht, PSV Reach Round of 32 in Europa League Soccer
Former champions Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven were among five teams qualifying for the round of 32 in soccer’s Europa League.
Legia Warsaw, FC Twente and Athletic Bilbao also moved into the knockout phase of Europe’s second-tier competition last night. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups go through to the next round, where they’re joined by the eight third-place finishers from the elite Champions League.
Anderlecht, the 1983 champion, beat Sturm Graz 3-0 to remain perfect after four games in Group L. PSV, the 1978 winner, drew 3-3 with Hapoel Tel-Aviv and Legia Warsaw beat Rapid Bucharest to qualify both from Group C.
Group K leader Twente beat Odense 3-2 to secure its place and stay three points ahead of Fulham, which defeated Wisla Krakow 4-1. Athletic Bilbao beat Red Bull Salzburg 1-0 to guarantee a top-two finish in Group F, while second-place Paris Saint-Germain topped Slovan Bratislava 1-0.
Rubin Kazan beat Tottenham 1-0 to leave both one point behind PAOK Salonika, which beat Shamrock Rovers 3-1, in Group A. Standard Liege beat Vorskla 3-1 and Hannover defeated Copenhagen 2-1 to stay tied atop Group B with eight points.
Vaslui and Lazio both won 1-0 at home to stay tied for second in Group D. Vaslui handed group leader Sporting Lisbon, which has already qualified for the next round, its first loss.
Stoke beat Maccabi Tel-Aviv 2-1 to stay atop Group E, while Birmingham rallied for a 2-2 home draw with Bruges that left both tied with Braga, a 5-1 winner over Maribor, in Group H.
Atletico Madrid beat Udinese 4-0 to leave both tied atop Group I with seven points. Celtic is two points back after rallying for a 3-1 win over Rennes.
Metalist Kharkiv beat Malmo 3-1 to increase its lead in Group G to four points over AZ Alkmaar, which tied Austria Vienna 2-2. Schalke drew 0-0 with AEK Larnaca to remain atop Group J over Maccabi Haifa, which lost 4-2 to Steaua Bucharest.
The fifth of six group matches will be played Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
