Manchester City Beats Birmingham in Carling Cup as Chelsea, Liverpool Win
Owen Hargreaves, in his first game since joining Manchester City last month, opened the scoring with a free kick in the 17th minute in Manchester last night. Mario Balotelli added the second goal seven minutes before halftime.
Chelsea overcame Alex’s red card in the second half to defeat Fulham 4-3 in a shootout after the teams tied 0-0. Cardiff also won in a shootout, 7-6 over Leicester after a 2-2 draw, while Phil Neville’s goal in extra time gave Everton a 2-1 win over West Brom.
Liverpool won 2-1 at Brighton as captain Steven Gerrard returned from a groin injury that sidelined him since March and Southampton defeated Preston 2-1.
Aldershot, Arsenal, Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Newcastle, Stoke and Wolverhampton advanced to the fourth round two nights ago.
The fourth-round draw will be made Sept. 24, with the games played the week of Oct. 24.
