Blackhawks Take 3-0 Lead Against Sharks on Byfuglien's Overtime Goal
The Chicago Blackhawks moved one win away from a spot in the Stanley Cup finals, getting an overtime goal from Dustin Byfuglien to win 3-2 against the San Jose Sharks and open a 3-0 lead in their playoff series.
Byfuglien scored 12:24 into overtime and Antti Niemi stopped 44 shots last night at the United Center in Chicago. The Blackhawks can finish off the best-of-seven National Hockey League Western Conference finals at home tomorrow.
Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals is today in Montreal, with the Canadiens trailing 2-1 in the series against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Patrick Marleau scored twice last night for the Sharks, the second straight game in which he has scored San Jose’s only two goals.
The teams exchanged goals late in the third period. Dave Bolland scored on a breakaway with 6:55 remaining to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead, only to have Marleau score his second goal of the game with 4:23 left to force overtime.
After a scoreless first period, Marleau had a power-play goal early in the second period and Chicago’s Patrick Sharp tied the game three minutes later.
