Barcelona Agrees to Sign Spain Striker Villa From Valencia for $48 Million
Barcelona agreed to sign Valencia striker David Villa for 40 million euros ($48 million) as the Spanish soccer title-holder restocks after failing to repeat as European champion.
The 28-year-old Spaniard, top scorer at the 2008 European Championship, got 107 goals in 166 league matches for Valencia, Barcelona said today on its website. Villa will sign a four-year contract provided he passes a medical exam in two days, Barcelona said.
Barcelona needs to strengthen some positions, technical director Txiki Begiristain told Barca TV, according to Efe news wire. A possible return by Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona depends on the “willingness” of the London team and on his contract, Begiristain was quoted as saying.
Barcelona spent $59 million to bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Inter Milan a year ago. The striker, who got four goals in 10 Champions League matches, isn’t for sale, Begiristain said.
Barcelona was beaten by Inter Milan in the Champions League semifinals. Inter plays Bayern Munich in the final in Madrid in three days.
