Atlanta Hawks Fire Coach Mike Woodson After NBA Playoff Sweep by Orlando
The Atlanta Hawks fired coach Mike Woodson after being swept in the second round of the National Basketball Association playoffs by the Orlando Magic.
The Hawks finished this season with a 53-29 mark before being eliminated by the Magic in four games. Atlanta lost Game 3 of the series, 105-75, the worst playoff loss in team history.
“After careful consideration, we have made a difficult decision regarding Coach Woodson’s contractual status,” Hawks General Manager Rick Sund said in a statement. “We’re grateful for Mike’s contributions over the last six years and we want to wish him the very best.”
Woodson had a 206-286 record since 2004 and led the Hawks to the playoffs the last three seasons. The Hawks were swept by Cleveland in the second round last year after losing to Boston in seven games in 2008.
Atlanta’s National Hockey League team, the Thrashers, are also without a coach after John Anderson was fired in April. Both teams are run by a local ownership group, the Atlanta Spirit.
