Germany Names Six Strikers to Preliminary Squad for Soccer World Cup
German national soccer team coach Joachim Loew named six strikers to the preliminary 27-man squad for next month’s World Cup.
Miroslav Klose, Stefan Kiessling, Lukas Podolski, Mario Gomez, Cacau and Thomas Mueller are in the group of players preparing for the tournament, according to a statement on the German soccer federation website. Germany faces Malta in a warm- up match later this week.
The team has three games before heading to South Africa for the tournament, which starts June 11. Loew will trim the squad by four players by June 1. Chelsea’s Michael Ballack, who’s played 98 times for the national team, is the only member not playing in the Bundesliga.
