San Jose Sharks Eliminate Detroit Red Wings in NHL Playoffs; Penguins Win
The San Jose Sharks beat Detroit 2-1 to eliminate the Red Wings from the National Hockey League Western Conference semifinal series.
The Sharks advanced to the conference finals in five games in the best-of-seven series. They will next play the Vancouver Canucks or Chicago Blackhawks in the next round.
After a scoreless first period, Brian Rafalski put Detroit up 1-0 less than three minutes into the second period at HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. Joe Thornton tied the game 1-1 two minutes later.
Patrick Marleau sealed the win for the Sharks 6 minutes, 59 seconds into the last period.
At Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, the defending champion Penguins defeated the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 to come within one game of reaching the Eastern Conference final.
The Penguins lead the conference semifinals 3-2. They can win the best-of-seven series tomorrow in Montreal.
Mike Cammalleri gave the Canadiens their only goal with 31 seconds left in the game.
