Everyday Africa

  1. 1

Photographers Peter DiCampo and Austin Merrill, two journalists who often work in Africa, found compelling moments in the everyday life there -- sights rarely seen amidst the conflict and violence so frequently covered by the media. Using their iPhone cameras, they started making pictures that would eventually become their project, "Everyday Africa." -- Brent Murray

Duekoue was the site of heavy fighting and a large massacre that saw hundreds dead during last year's post-election violence, and many people still refuse to leave the relative comfort and security of the refugee camp to return home.

Two boys share a seat on a motorbike in a village near Blolequin, Ivory Coast. Much of the village was destroyed during last year's post-election violence, and the population has only recently begun to return.

This project was initially conceived during a trip to Ivory Coast that was funded by a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.
