The gap between Tesla Motors Inc.’s offer to buy SolarCity Corp. and the price that investors are willing to pay for the largest U.S. rooftop solar developer has widened since the announcement, indicating that the market expects the marriage of billionaire Elon Musk’s two publicly traded companies will fail. Tesla agreed to buy SolarCity on Aug. 1 in all-stock deal valued at about $22.08 a share, based on its current stock price. SolarCity fell 9.1 percent to $18.78 at the close of trading in New York Thursday.
