European Union foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini said “a political solution to the civil war” in Syria is needed in order to defeat Islamic State.
Islamic State, also known as Da’esh, “continues to pose a threat to the people of Syria, Iraq, the region as well as to Europe and beyond,” Mogherini said in a statement late Friday. “The recent military advances against Da’esh by the Global Coalition together with the Syrian Democratic Forces in North West Syria are welcome and the EU will continue to commit its efforts, as part of the Coalition, to its non-military fields of activity.”
“Complete defeat of Da’esh in Syria will require a political solution to the civil war, addressing the main cause of its expansion in Syria,” Mogherini said.
“The use of civilians as human shields in Manbij, Syria, and the reported abduction of 2,000 people by ISIL/Da’esh from the town shows that civilians are yet again the main victims of Syria’s conflict,” Mogherini said.
