Zimbabwean police on Wednesday deployed in townships including Warren Park and Epworth in the capital, Harare, ahead of a planned stayaway to protest an economic collapse that has led to a shortage of cash, import controls and the failure of the government to pay state workers their salaries on time.

Some schools are closed and there is little traffic on main arterial roads into the city.

The stayaway comes after protests over the last few days temporarily closed the main border post with south Africa and led to riots in Harare. An umbrella body representing government workers called a strike starting Tuesday.
