France’s Socialist Party will hold a primary in January to select its candidate for next year’s presidential election, meaning Francois Hollande will be the first sitting French president to face an internal party contest before seeking a second mandate.

The Socialist Party called on the greens and the communists to join the two-round vote on Jan. 22 and Jan. 29 2017 in an effort to have a unified candidate of the left in the election, which is held in April and May of next year.
