“Alice Through the Looking Glass” topped the box office in China over the weekend, collecting more than double the ticket sales than what “Alice in Wonderland” generated in its debut six years ago.
The Walt Disney Co. fantasy-adventure film brought in $26.5 million in Chinese theaters since it debuted on Friday, according to data complied by Entgroup. It surpassed last weekend’s winner, “The Angry Birds Movie,” which slipped to second.
The sequel to “Alice in Wonderland,” which generated $10.8 million in its opening weekend in March 2010, features Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.
The film made its debut with sales of $28.1 million to land in second place in the U.S. and Canadian theaters, following the Marvel Comics-based movie “X-Men: Apocalypse,” according to ComScore Inc.
