Sudan Declines to Renew UN’s Head of Humanitarian Affairs Permit

Sudan has refused to renew the work permit of the United Nation’s head of Humanitarian Affairs Ivo Freijsen, which expires on June 6, the agency said in an e-mailed statement.

“The humanitarian country team is concerned about the impact of this decision on the operating environment for all humanitarian organizations in Sudan, which provide emergency relief, and early recovery and transitional assistance to those in need,” according to the statement.

Freijsen is the fourth senior UN official to be “expelled” from Sudan in the last two years, according to the statement. This is in addition to the forced closure of Tearfund, a non government organization, in December 2015 and expulsion of three international NGO country representatives in recent months.
