- Funding round brings total amount raised to $126 million
- Backers are competing with Amazon for foothold in cloud market
Mesosphere Inc., which makes cloud computing software, said it raised $73.5 million from investors, including Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Co.
The round, which was led by HP Enterprise, brings Mesosphere’s total funding to about $126 million. Microsoft and HP are each looking for an edge in the cloud computing market, which is led by Amazon.com Inc. and estimated to be worth $204 billion by research firm Gartner.
Mesosphere was the subject of acquisition rumors last year, suggesting that Microsoft considered buying the company for more than $1 billion. The latest financing round values the company at well below that, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified because the terms are private.
“We have always had a business relationship -- not an acquisition relationship -- with Microsoft,” said Florian Leibert, the chief executive officer of Mesosphere.
