Kenyan soldiers killed 19 al-Shabaab insurgents who planned to carry out an attack near a camp housing Somali National Army and African Union troops in southern Somalia, the Kenyan Defence Ministry said.
The Islamist-militant fighters approached the camp after midnight on Wednesday before being identified by a Kenya Defence Forces patrol, who engaged them in a “fierce battle,” the ministry said in a statement e-mailed from the capital, Nairobi. Weapons including 10 AK-47 rifles and three rocket-propelled grenades were recovered in the fighting, it said.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for an attack on a Kenyan army base in January at el-Adde, near Somalia’s border with Kenya, in which it said 100 soldiers were killed. The Kenyan government hasn’t given a death toll.
