Here’s one way Target Corp. outperforms larger rival Wal-Mart Stores Inc.: home-price appreciation. U.S. residences that are located near a Target store gained more in value than those in the proximity of a Wal-Mart, according to RealtyTrac. Homes near a Target that were sold last year rose 27 percent in value from the point when they were purchased, the research firm found. Compare that with 16 percent for Wal-Mart. Target’s focus on more affluent areas of the Northeast and West probably accounts for much of the difference.
